Medical Tests

Hello, class!

Sometimes the doctor must order some tests to diagnose an illness, as part of the regular care of an existing problem, or as part of a regular check-up.

When the doctor wants you to have blood work, an x-ray or other test, she will give you a requisition form. You must take that form to the lab or imaging clinic.

Today you can practice listening and reading about this topic.

Read and listen:
Taking a urine sample
Taking an X-ray
Having a Blood Test in the Lab
Calling About Test Results (normal)
Calling About Test Results (need more testing)

You can continue to work on the spelling words from last week:

Learn to spell the doctor's office vocabulary.
Next, try to unscramble the sentences.
Finally, write your own sentences.

Watch and listen:
In order to encourage all men over 40 to have a prostate exam, Dr. Oz conducted one on television. You can watch the show HERE.

Have fun!

Today I will give you back the paragraphs you wrote for your writing tests. The topics to choose from were:
  1. the story behind a scar
  2. an accident that involved medical attention
  3. comparison of the Canadian healthcare system with that of your first country
Please note that you were NOT to write about all three. Your essay should be about only ONE of these topics.

Open a new MS Word document and type your paragraph. Microsoft Word will check your grammar and spelling. I will show you how this works.  We will save and print your paragraphs.

When you are finished, please practice writing sentences HERE.

Happy New Year!

Hello, Cas' students!

Cas sends her apologies for not being here today. She was sick with strep during the holidays and wants to be fully recovered before coming to work.
Please use the Internet to find out:
  1. What were the biggest and most interesting news stories of 2011?
  2. What are some predictions for 2012?
If you come across words you don't know, please look them up using Wordnik. This is a good website to learn to use. Call me over if you need help. After you try Wordnik, you can use other online dictionaries as well.

Take some notes. Be prepared to discuss your findings in class tomorrow.

Otherwise, you are welcome to use any English language software, the Canada software, or any website to practice English. There are many choices in my sidebar (look on the right and also scroll down).

I'm not sure it will work on these computers, but let's try to use a site called todaysmeet.com. This website should allow us to create temporary chat rooms where we can write messages to one another. Call me over and I will help. Of course you may only chat in English!

Last night I created a chat room. You can go there by visiting http://todaysmeet.com/casclass
Happy new year!
