Black History Month
This month we educate ourselves about the history of people of African descent in Canada. We also celebrate the contributions of black Canadians.
Use the internet to find answers to these questions.
- Who was Olivier Le Jeune? When was he brought to North America?
- In what year was slavery abolished in Canada?
- What does emancipate mean?
- In what year were slaves emancipated in the United States?
- Look at this map of Canada and the United States.
- What are the blue states?
- What are the grey states?
- What are the arrows?
- Visit this site to travel the journey of an escaping slave. Look up the words you do not know. For example, what is a bounty hunter?
Watch this video about Canadian Black History, then answer these questions:
- Who was Mr. Matthieu da Costa?
- Who was the first black Canadian born doctor?
- Who was Harriet Tubman?
Practice spelling the vocabulary words for this topic.
Levels 1, 2 and 3: learn these words.

Listen to this telephone message at an optometrist's office. Then answer the questions.
Try this quiz. It's rather difficult!
Read and listen to a dialogue HERE. It has a few idioms!

Medical Tests
Hello, class!
Sometimes the doctor must order some tests to diagnose an illness, as part of the regular care of an existing problem, or as part of a regular check-up.
When the doctor wants you to have blood work, an x-ray or other test, she will give you a requisition form. You must take that form to the lab or imaging clinic.
Today you can practice listening and reading about this topic.
Read and listen:
Taking a urine sample
Taking an X-ray
Having a Blood Test in the Lab
Calling About Test Results (normal)
Calling About Test Results (need more testing)
You can continue to work on the spelling words from last week:
Learn to spell the doctor's office vocabulary.
Next, try to unscramble the sentences.
Finally, write your own sentences.
Watch and listen:
In order to encourage all men over 40 to have a prostate exam, Dr. Oz conducted one on television. You can watch the show HERE.
Have fun!

Happy New Year!
Hello, Cas' students!
Cas sends her apologies for not being here today. She was sick with strep during the holidays and wants to be fully recovered before coming to work.
Please use the Internet to find out:
Take some notes. Be prepared to discuss your findings in class tomorrow.
Otherwise, you are welcome to use any English language software, the Canada software, or any website to practice English. There are many choices in my sidebar (look on the right and also scroll down).
I'm not sure it will work on these computers, but let's try to use a site called todaysmeet.com. This website should allow us to create temporary chat rooms where we can write messages to one another. Call me over and I will help. Of course you may only chat in English!
Last night I created a chat room. You can go there by visiting http://todaysmeet.com/casclass
