Grocery Shopping on the Internet

Hi, students of the seniors' class!

Teacher Joleen at the Sarnia YMCA has made this excellent tutorial about shopping for groceries on the Internet for pickup. In the city where I am now, I can pay $9.99 USD for delivery, which is not bad if I am buying two weeks' worth of groceries at a time. I also tip the Instacart picker / driver.

Take a look!

Tell me how you are doing. Leave me a comment below. Don't forget to add your name after your comment!

Shopping for Food

Hello, students of the seniors' class!

This week we learned how to describe food by packaging, by taste, smell, and texture. I brought in four foods that you tasted and described: dark chocolate, wasabi flavoured roasted seaweed snack, Garam Masala snack, and a breakfast cereal. We used words such as "creamy, tart, crunchy, crisp, umami, bittersweet," and "spicy."

By the end of the week, we were able to describe a food from back home to a classmate from another culture. SaiYing shared about glutinous rice balls filled with bean paste. Tareq shared about Pacha, while Nabil told us about a traditional Iraqi way of cooking fish near an open fire. I told you about Fiddlehead season in Canada.

Do you need to review food vocabulary? Go here:

FRUIT
VEGETABLES
FOOD
Some HERBS
DRINKS

Now let's learn some new vocabulary for describing edibles:

Adjectives describing food
Adjectives to describe the taste, condition and other properties of food
Adjectives describing how a food was cooked

By the time we finish this module, you might not find this quiz too difficult.
This adjective - noun matching quiz is hard today, but should get easier by Friday.

Describing Clothing When Shopping

Hello, students of the seniors' class!

This past week we learned new terms and expressions we can use while shopping for clothes.

Practice listening to and pronouncing these words for patterns and materials. When you finish listening, there are quizzes you can take and games to play.

Here is some vocabulary you may find useful and a dialogue to practice. Remember how to do a pattern drill? Repeat your part of the dialogue over and over using different vocabulary in the blank each time.

Shopping for Food

Hello!

This past week or so we have been learning to ask where to find things in a supermarket. We have also done some comparison shopping using store flyers.

This is a very comprehensive audio / text lesson about grocery shopping.

Here is a good site where you can listen and study new vocabulary.

Watch this video of supermarket dialogues. I am a new fan of EnglishClub.com!

Price Adjustments and Price Matching

Well, guess what we stumbled onto!  While reading The Bay's returns policy, we discovered that we are VERY interested in something called "price adjustments." This is when something you bought goes on sale right after you bought it. Often, the store will allow you to bring that item back with your receipt for a refund of the difference.

Another concept I'll bet you're going to love is called "price matching." We'll talk about that soon.

Our interesting true story for Friday is about "wardrobing." Click this link and look for the word LISTEN in the top menu.  Play the MP3 file to listen to the story.

Returning Faulty Merchandise (Continued from last week)

Hello, Xi Wen Bi!

Thank you for calling. It was nice to hear your voice. We miss you.  I hope your ankle completely heals soon so you can come back to class.

This week we are going to do some role plays using real store return policies. Also we will fill out some slips of paper about the purchased items.  Our class will divide into clerks and customers.  Each customer will have two or three of those slips of paper with information about a purchase.  Each clerk will have one of the store policies.

The language of the policies is very difficult, so we have spent this week studying them in teams, helping each other to break down the language.

If you want to print out those sheets, you can go to the Commercial Services page of my website. Scroll down do "Shopping - Returns" and click the link.  Print that document.

Cheers!  -- Kelly

Online Shopping...Safely

Hello, students of the seniors' class!

Last week you requested that I teach you how to purchase things over the Internet. Of course we want to do that safely!

This is a great video about online safety when shopping.
Here is the presentation we saw about shopping and banking safely online.

This week we began by learning about PayPal. If you would like to open a free personal PalPal account today, first read the User Agreement. You may want to put that through a translation site or ask a family member to help you understand it. It is very long. This one is in Chinese, but it is not intended for customers based in Canada, I don't think.

When you feel ready to register, go here.

Do you want to browse items on Amazon.ca?  Next week we will learn step by step how to order an item.

Want to look at a local grocery store flyer?

If you would like to open MS Word and work on your compositions, I can help you do that.
